Cuba to be guest country at 2015 International Festival of Mayan Culture in Mexico

Cuba is the guest country to the 2015 International Festival of Mayan Culture (FICMaya) to be held at various locations in the Mexican state of Yucatan from Oct 16 to 25, it was announced here this weekend.

This fourth edition of the festival also has the adjoining state of Quintana Roo as guest state, says the Governor of Yucatan, Rolando Zapata.

The FICMaya is already an important global meeting for visitors from around the world who wish to learn more about the original culture of the Mayans.

According to experts, Mayab was the territory chosen for the development of the Mayan civilization which at present includes part of Guatemala, western Honduras and Belize, and the states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Campeche and Chiapas and Tabasco in Mexico.

Zapata emphasized that the event would also be an ideal space for dialogue, debate, exchange of ideas and reflections over this ancient culture, which is still alive, contemporary and in force.

There will be coloquiums, roundtables and academic panels where various issues will be discussed by experts from countries such as Mexico, Cuba, the United States, Slovenia, Argentina, Australia, Russia and Holland.

He emphasized that the event would have the theme “Science in time, the landscape and architecture of the Mayab”.

Reports meanwhile quoted Cuba’s Deputy Culture Minister, Fernando Rojas, as saying that the participation of the island nation in th4e festival was a sign of brotherhood between the Mexican and Cuban peoples, especially those of Yucatan.
