The Gran Melia Rome receives the prestigious Conde Nast Traveler award as “best city hotel in the world”

The Gran Meliá Rome Villa Agrippina stands on the site of an ancient first century Roman villa, and owes its name to the mother of the Emperor Nero, its original owner. Located in one of the most attractive areas in Rome, the Janiculum hill, near the district of Trastevere and with stunning views of the Vatican, the river Tiber and the famous Castel Sant Ángelo, the hotel conveys an earthly fusion of luxury and spirituality, highly appreciated by its guests.

The ancient buildings were renovated and extended after years of excavations, as the site was home to countless first and second century archaeological artefacts of incalculable value and beauty which are now on show in the elegant galleries and public areas in the hotel. The opening by Meliá Hotels International in 2012 under its luxury Gran Meliá hotel brand created a new benchmark for the luxury hotel industry in Rome and the whole of Italy, with the hotel recently being admitted to the exclusive club of the “Leading Hotels of the World”.

The Latin passion of Gran Meliá merges with the art of Michelangelo in the hotel’s 116 rooms and suites, set in the 10,000 metres of gardens known as the “Orte Domiciani”, once the city’s first botanical gardens. In addition to the brand’s classical services, such as the Red Level or the Wellness YHI Spa, the Gran Meliá Rome offers a sublime Italian culinary experience under the guiding hand of Michelin chef Alfonso Iaccarino, alma mater of the acclaimed Viva Vocce restaurant.

Thanks to the attributes which have allowed the hotel to join the most exclusive consortia of international luxury hotels, along with the exquisite service that characterises all Gran Meliá hotels, the readers of Condé Nast Traveler Spain magazine awarded it the highest rating amongst all the city hotels in the world. During the award ceremony, the Vice President Europe, Middle East and Africa, Enrique Ortiz, was honoured and proud to receive the award on behalf of Meliá, stating that “the Gran Meliá Rome is undoubtedly the finest masterpiece of the Gran Meliá brand, which for us is the same as saying that it is the best city hotel in the world”.
