THE LEGENDARY SPITFIRE AT AVALON

The most famous combat aircraft of World War Two will display its style, dash and airborne elegance at the Australian International Airshow 2015.
The Supermarine Spitfire was developed in the 1930's and gained legendary status during the Battle of Britain.
Australians flew Spitfires throughout the South West Pacific during the war and in the defence of Darwin.
Regardless of the theatre, these Rolls Royce-powered fighters reigned supreme.

They proved more than a match for the German ME-109s in Europe and North Africa and the Japanese Zeros in the Pacific.
At Avalon, the Spitfire will play a leading role in the Heroes of the Sky tribute to the centenary of Anzac.
It will perform a series of simulated combat manoeuvres with other vintage warbirds including the Kittyhawk, Mustang, Hudson bomber and Catalina.
This Spitfire was the last of its famous line acquired by the Royal Australian Air Force during World War Two.
Later it fell into disuse but was "rescued" in 1982 by noted aircraft restorer Col Pay who began a detailed program to bring the aircraft back to her former glory. It is one of only two flying Spitfires in Australia.
The aircraft is owned by Temora Aviation Museum which maintains and operates it in tribute to those who flew them during World War Two.

The Australian International Airshow has scheduled public sessions on the afternoon of Friday 27 February and then all day Saturday and Sunday.
