Rise of the ‘Staycation’: Only Four Destinations Located Overseas
Out of the 20 most popular destinations based on searches between 22nd and 25th August, just four are located overseas: Barcelona, Paris, Dublin and Amsterdam. In the UK, the most popular destinations are London, Blackpool and Manchester.
Four of the top 20 are coastal resorts in the UK (Blackpool, Bournemouth, Brighton and Scarborough), which is unfortunate considering the bad weather forecast for this weekend.
Festival Fringe makes Edinburgh Most Expensive Destination
Based on the 20 most popular destinations, Edinburgh is the most expensive this bank holiday weekend. Due to the final weekend of the Festival Fringe, which runs from 1st to 25th August, one night here will cost an average of £203. This is a 41 per cent increase from July, when one night cost just £144 on average.
Prices have also increased in Liverpool, where the Summer Jam (part of the Liverpool International Music Festival) will take place in Sefton Park this weekend. One night will cost an average of £138, which is a 57 per cent increase from just £88 on average during August. This makes Liverpool the fourth most expensive destination, after Edinburgh, London and Bath.
Denise Bartlett, UK Public Relations: “Edinburgh has come under fire recently for inflated hotel prices during the popular Festival Fringe, so it is a shame to see hotel prices rise in Liverpool for a smaller event. The cheapest hotel prices this bank holiday can be found in Blackpool (average of £65 per night), Birmingham (£67), Scarborough (£84) and Leeds (£86).”
