Adelaide Convention Centre hosts a premier international cycling conferece

Creating cycling friendly workplaces will be high on the agenda when the world’s premier international cycling conference comes to town this month, with host venue Adelaide Convention Centre leading by example.

The Adelaide Convention Centre has successfully created a cycling culture of its own, with more than 20 per cent of the permanent workforce now choosing bikes over cars for their daily commute to and from work.

This is an increase of five per cent over the last two years.
The Adelaide Convention Centre will use its partnership with Velo-city Global Adelaide 2014 (May 27-30) as an opportunity to showcase the facilities and cycling education provided to employees to encourage them to cycle to work.

A key aim of Velo-city Global is to promote cycling as an efficient, healthy, environmentally-friendly mode of transport, and to promote its greater use.

Among the initiatives the Centre has put in place to encourage employees to choose cycling as their preferred mode of transport are:
  • Bike safety workshops with Bike SA and Motor Accident Commission;
  • Cycling team building events including participation in community rides like Amy Gillet Foundation Ride and the annual Ride to Work Day. The Centre will also have a team of cyclists in the Velo-city Global Community Ride;
  • Secure bike storage facilities, changing rooms and showers;
  • Active promotion within the Centre including information being provided to employees during their induction and the use of current employees as Cycling Ambassadors.

In addition, the Adelaide Convention Centre has agreed to become part of the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) new ‘I Bike I Like’ campaign. The campaign includes businesses identifying themselves as bike friendly.

The Centre will also become a cycling hub during Velo-city Global where delegates can pick up a free bike to ride during the conference.
Adelaide Convention Centre Chief Executive Alec Gilbert said the Centre was looking forward to hosting Velo-city Global with delegates attending from across Australia and overseas.
“We support the objectives of Velo-city Global and in our own small way have encouraged cycling at the Centre through a number of initiatives,” said Mr Gilbert.
