U.S. - International Air Traffic totaled 15.3 Million Passengers

U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) announced International air traffic to/from the U.S. in January 2014.

International air traffic to/from the U.S. (1)totaled 15.3 million passengers in January 2014, a 7.8 percent increase over January 2013. U.S. citizen travel (6.4 million) increased 7.2 percent and comprised 41.6 percent of all air traffic. However, non-U.S. citizen air travelers (8.9 million) increased by 8.1 percent raising their market share to 58 percent.

U.S. airlines carried 8.0 million passengers, up 6.0 percent, however their share slipped from 53 to 52 percent. Foreign flags carried 7.3 million passengers, up 9.6 percent from January 2013.

The following, overseas, Canada and Mexico regions are ‘breakouts’ of international:

Overseas air traffic accounted for 11.1 million passengers, 73 percent of all U.S.-international air traffic, grew by 7.3 percent. U.S. citizen travel (4.7 million) increased 5.4 percent and comprised 42.2 percent of all air traffic. Non-U.S. citizen air travelers (6.4 million) increased by 8.6 percent increasing their market share to 57.8 percent.

U.S. airlines carried 5.6 million passengers, up 5.9 percent, however their share dropped to 50.5 percent. Foreign flags carried 5.5 million passengers, up 8.7 percent from January 2013.

North American markets accounted for 27 percent of U.S. international air traffic flows.

Canadian air traffic accounted for 2.1 million passengers, 14 percent of all international traffic, increased by 4.5 percent. U.S. citizen travel (407,000) increased 3.3 percent and comprised 19.1 percent of all air traffic in the market. Canadian, and other foreign national citizen air travelers transiting through Canada (1.7 million) increased by 4.7 percent. Market share increased slightly.

U.S. flags carried 857,000 passengers, down 1.2 percent from last year, and their share dropped to 40.3 percent. Foreign flags carried 1.3 million passengers, up 8.7 percent.

Mexico air traffic accounted for 2.1 million passengers, 13 percent of all international traffic, and was up 13.7 percent. U.S. citizen travel (1.3 million) increased 15.5 percent and comprised 62 percent of all air traffic. Mexicans, and other foreign national air travelers (782,000) transiting through Mexico, increased by 11.0 percent, but their market share declined to 38 percent.

U.S. flags carried 1.54 million passengers, up 11.0 percent from last year, dropping their share to 75 percent. Foreign flags carried 510,000 passengers, up 22.9 percent, increasing share to 25 percent.

Â The adjustment to these regions, reflecting visitation (1+ nights), occurs after year-end data is compiled.

(2) Numbers for U.S. carriers slightly exceed what has been reported by Airlines for America. A4A reported mainline numbers for most of their member carriers. The DHS-I92/APIS data includes all carriers with international service to/from the U.S. including regional carriers, both affiliated and non-affiliated, and general aviation. The I-92APIS, however is not inclusive of Pacific inter-port or other ‘beyond’ traffic.
