Pulling into the driveway of the Berjaya Langkawi I sigh … this is the sort of holiday I was after – relaxed, beachside and almost in the middle of nowhere.
Located on Palau Langkawi, the sprawling 70-acre resort is a 20-minute easy journey from the airport. Upon arrival, you’ll notice a team of helpful concierge staff ready and eager to assist, as well as a bunch of buggies ushering in and escorting guests between their chalets and the reception – a much needed ride considering the sheer size of the property.
At check in we get a run down of the variety of restaurants available and services offered, then we’re on the buggies and whisked off to our chalet. There are 8 types of rooms available from a Rainforest Chalet through to the Presidential Suite on Water. All are spacious with either a water or rainforest view. The chalets are well equipped and all have balconies, to sit and listen to the wide variety of wildlife and the water lapping underneath. Well spaced apart allowing for privacy, the Executive Suite on Water and the Presidential Suite on Water sit out over Burau Bay and contain a separate dining area with kitchen, the latter with a second bedroom perfect for families.
The resort has more than enough dining options including Pahn Thai Restaurant, which is built on stilts over the Barau Bay waters, serving up modern Thai cuisine. Continuing with the Asian theme, Oriental Pearl offers authentic Cantonese and Szechuan meals and Mizumi Japanese serves – you guessed it – fresh traditional Japanese fare. The casual dining consists of Dayang Café, where breakfast is also served daily, Beach Restaurant located on the resorts private beach, Boat House Bar and the Lobby Lounge, all of which provide guests with a variety of snacks, light meals and beverages throughout the day into the evening. If your better half is grumpy they are missing out on the footy, soccer or tennis – don’t fear – the Rimba Sports Bar tucked away behind reception has all the sport channels playing on the big screen with a full bar, playstation room, jukebox and internet stations.
The centrepiece of the resort is the pool, beach and watersports area. Although plenty of space for all guests, it is advisable to get in early to choose the perfect sun lounger for your day of leisure. The pool area is tiered and has a waterfall and swim up pool bar, along with towel shack where you can order food and grab an ice cream. Or head to the beach where the resort sets up rows of sun lounges and umbrellas, and book in some activities at the watersports kiosk. There are at least 3-4 scheduled activities each day ranging from learning how to windsurf to taking a nighttime nature walk with a resort guide. It’s no surprise, these value-adds make the resort a popular place for families.
In case you were thinking of tying the knot here, Berjaya offers a variety of wedding packages along with conference facilities ranging from 30 cocktail to 450 seated. For those on a relaxing, kid free holiday, there is also the day spa – Taaras Spa – with a full menu of spa treatments and a steam room, sauna and outdoor pool.
