GARDEN CITY, NY—The Garden City Hotel has begun a $35-million renovation of its 272 guestrooms and suites. The first phase of newly revitalized rooms will be completed by mid-February.
The extensive accommodations upgrade will comprise more than 300,000 sq. ft . All celebration and meeting spaces, along with the new Polo Steakhouse and Polo Lounge, will be open and fully operational during the renovation.
“The Garden City Hotel is committed to offering guests a world-class experience—these top-to-bottom upgrades will elevate the hotel’s high caliber of luxury that it is already known for,” stated Morris Moinian, founder of Fortuna Realty Group, which acquired the hotel in 2012.
Italian designer Marcello Pozzi, who redesigned Beverly Hills’ Mr. C Hotel, is overseeing the interior design of the guestrooms, which complement the recent million-dollar renovation to the hotel’s public spaces, including the lobby and 25,000 sq. ft. of meeting and event space as well as the launch of the Polo Steakhouse and Polo Lounge. Sixteen of the 272 guestrooms are suites, including four penthouse suites, and range from 780 to 1,677 sq. ft.
Each new guestroom features custom millwork and a soft, neutral color palette and include custom-made Italian furnishings by Felice Tedeschi of Tedeschi USA, subway tile and granite baths, The Garden City Hotel’s own Luxe Dreams pillow-top mattresses and French boutique bath amenities. The Garden City Hotel also will introduce technology allowing guests to connect all of their electronic devices to in-room, flat-screen, 42-in. television.
The original hotel was built in 1874 by the multimillionaire merchant Alexander Turney Stewart and has hosted well-known entertainers, politicians and athletes. Previous guests included the Vanderbilts, Astors and Kennedys. Aviator Charles Lindbergh stayed at The Garden City Hotel the night before his trans-Atlantic flight in 1927. The hotel has hosted other notable figures from Margaret Thatcher to Hillary Clinton and is currently a favorite stop over for many of the notable music acts performing on Long Island, according to the company.
