U.S. International Air Passenger Traffic Totaled 104.03 Million through July 2012


International air traffic to/from the United States (1) totaled 104.03 million passengers from January through July 2012, an eight percent increase over the first seven months of 2011.
For the month of July, air traffic was up five percent from July 2011, disclosing slower growth.
U.S. citizen air travel (47.6 million) increased five percent and comprised 46 percent of all air traffic. Foreign national (non-U.S. citizen) air travelers (56.5 million) increased by 11 percent, representing 54 percent of the total market.
U.S. airlines carried 56.7 million passengers, up five percent, however their share dropped one percentage point to 55 percent. Foreign flags carried 47.3 million passengers, up 11 percent from January-June 2011, with their share increasing to 45 percent.

International is the grand total of overseas, Canada and Mexico regions, as follows:
Overseas air traffic accounted for 77.5 million passengers, 74 percent of all international air traffic.
U.S. citizen travel (36.3 million) increased five percent and comprised 47 percent of all air traffic. Foreign national air travelers (41.2 million) increased by 11 percent, increasing market share to 53 percent, a percentage point increase in share between 2011 and 2012.
U.S. airlines carried 40.6 million passengers, up six percent, however their share dropped from 53 to 52 percent. Foreign flags carried 36.9 million passengers, up 11 percent from the first seven months of 2011. Their traffic share increased to 48 percent.

North American markets (Canada and Mexico) accounted for 26 percent of U.S. international air traffic flows.
U.S.-Canada air traffic accounted for 14.5 million passengers, 14 percent of all international traffic.
U.S. citizen travel (3.7 million) increased five percent and comprised only 25 percent of air traffic in the market. Canadian and other foreign national citizen air travelers (10.9 million) increased by seven percent with their market share resulting at 75 percent.
U.S. flags carried 6.6 million passengers, up two percent, and their share dropped from 47 to 46 percent. Foreign flags carried 7.9 million passengers, up 10 percent increasing their share to 54 percent.

U.S. - Mexico air traffic accounted for 12.0 million passengers, 12 percent of all U.S. - international traffic, and was up six percent.
U.S. citizen travel (7.6 million) increased two percent and comprised 63 percent of all air traffic. Foreign national air travelers (4.4 million) increased by 14 percent increasing their market share to 37 percent.
U.S. flags carried 9.5 million passengers, up two percent from last year, and their share dropped from 83 to 79 percent. Foreign flags carried 2.5 million passengers, up 31 percent increasing share to 21 percent.
