Mexico and Spain Sign Tourism Memorandum of Understanding

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between Mexico and Spain will enhance experiences and information sharing with the goal of increasing tourism between the two countries.


The signing of the MOU coincided with the 93rd Meeting of the United Nations World Tourism Council (UNWTO) Executive Council meeting.

The MOU is designed to deepen cooperation between Mexico and Spain and their tourism industries to boost tourism and as such, drive economic growth.

The MOU establishes a base for the exchange of ideas regarding the design, implementation and success of Mexico's National Agreement on Tourism and Spain's Integral National Tourism Plan, Tourist Destination Requalification Program and Tourist Certification Program.

The signing ceremony was performed by Mexico's Secretary of Tourism, Gloria Guevara and Spain's Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism of Spain, Jose Manuel Soria Lopez, at the Palace of Congresses in Madrid, and was witnessed by Taleb Rifai, Secretary General of the UNWTO.

As part of the MOU, Mexico's National Agreement on Tourism, which successfully brought together all segments of the public and private sectors, will be utilized as an example for the Spanish Government to further grow and develop their tourism industry and offering.

Secretary Guevara indicated that the signing of the MOU was hugely important and said it will allow the two governments to continue to exchange ideas for the betterment of their tourism industries and Spanish and Mexican travelers.

While at the meeting of the UNWTO, Secretary General Taleb Rifa announced that Campeche, Mexico would host the 94th Meeting of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (WTO), to be held from 24th to 26th October 2012. Mexico was chosen amongst a cohort which included countries such as Serbia and Egypt.
Mexico was elected to Executive Board UNWTO in October 2011.
