Egypt targets regional tourism hub status through aviation and investment

Egypt is pursuing plans to strengthen its position as a regional tourism hub through airport development, aviation modernisation and expanded international connectivity.
Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty outlined the priorities during a meeting with William Heinecke, Chairman of Thailand-based Minor International, in Bangkok on 12 October 2026.

The meeting focused on opportunities to expand Minor International’s investments in Egypt’s tourism and hospitality sectors. The discussions also covered workforce development, international visitor markets and potential cooperation across additional destinations.

Minor International operates hospitality and restaurant businesses across the Asia-Pacific region and international markets. Abdelatty welcomed the company’s plans to expand its presence in Egypt and discussed opportunities arising from the country’s tourism development programme.

Aviation connectivity and international visitor markets

Abdelatty outlined government plans to develop airports, modernise the air transport fleet and expand connectivity with international markets. These measures form part of Egypt’s stated objective to strengthen its regional tourism position.

The discussions also addressed opportunities to attract additional visitors, particularly from Asian markets. The government linked expanded connectivity and workforce development with efforts to meet tourism-sector demand and align services with international standards.

Abdelatty expressed interest in cooperation with Minor International on vocational and technical training programmes. These programmes would prepare qualified Egyptian personnel for employment across  hotels and tourism businesses.

The proposed cooperation addresses workforce requirements as tourism activity expands. It also forms part of discussions about developing hospitality capabilities and supporting Egypt’s competitiveness as an international destination.

Hospitality investment and destination development

During the meeting, Abdelatty referred to a partnership agreement signed in October 2025 with an Egyptian company in the presence of the prime minister. He also highlighted the launch of a residential and hotel development on the Red Sea coast.

The foreign minister reaffirmed the government’s support for investment partnerships in tourism and hospitality. He also expressed interest in diversifying Minor International’s Egyptian portfolio and extending cooperation to additional tourist destinations.

New urban developments featured among the investment opportunities discussed. Abdelatty highlighted the New Administrative Capital and New Alamein City as locations offering potential opportunities for tourism-related investment.

The discussions formed part of Egypt’s broader engagement with Thai businesses during Abdelatty’s visit to Bangkok. His visit began on 11 October 2026 and included meetings intended to strengthen bilateral economic, trade and investment cooperation.

The tourism discussions covered aviation infrastructure, hotel investment, professional training and access to international visitor markets. No specific new investment value, additional hotel opening date or formal training programme launch date appeared in the government’s announcement.
