Middle East conflict impacts UK event professionals, MIA survey finds

The Meetings Industry Association (MIA) reports that 73% of UK event professionals are currently affected by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to findings from a recent survey.

The results indicate increased uncertainty across segments of the UK business meetings and events sector, particularly in cases involving international delegates, speakers and travel arrangements.

Respondents identified a range of impacts, including event postponements and cancellations. Some larger events have been rescheduled into 2027, while others reported slower booking activity and noticeable gaps in event calendars, reflecting increased caution among clients when confirming participation or signing contracts.

A recurring trend highlighted in the survey is increased hesitancy from international clients. This includes delayed decision-making, reluctance to commit to contracts, and requests to provisionally hold event space without formal confirmation. In certain instances, contractual terms are being revised to allow greater flexibility.

In response, the Meetings Industry Association (MIA) is working with international law firm CMS and event insurance specialists InEvexco to assess how the sector can strengthen booking confidence and mitigate cancellation risks. The collaboration will focus on developing practical contractual and insurance approaches to support organisations during periods of uncertainty.

“The current political climate is difficult to predict, which means clear, practical guidance is even more important to help organisations make informed decisions and maintain confidence during times of uncertainty.”

“As we continue to monitor the situation and its impact on the sector, we encourage organisations to continue sharing their experiences with us. This insight is vital in helping us, alongside CMS and InEvexco, build a clearer picture and ensure we can respond effectively and provide the right advice and support to the industry.”
