The provider of the computer-controlled passenger and baggage handling system used at BER Airport, among other locations, has announced that it may take several more days to provide functional and secure software. The company has called in additional specialists and is working intensively on a resolution.
Given that check-in and boarding are still largely manual, longer processing times, delays, and cancellations by airlines may continue today despite the mobilization of all available resources. Passengers are advised to check with their airline well in advance to find out whether their booked flight is taking place.
The airport operator regrets the inconvenience caused to all affected passengers. At the same time, the airport operator is continuing to work on alternative solutions to minimise the impact on passengers caused by the cyberattack on the external system provider. Since operations resumed early yesterday morning, baggage can once again be sorted automatically by flight thanks to a change in procedures, which has made processing easier and faster.
BER Airport continues to recommend that passengers use their airline's online check-in service to avoid waiting times at the counters. In addition, numerous self-service machines are available in the terminals where passengers of the 19 affiliated airlines can check in themselves and print their boarding passes. Thereafter, luggage can be deposited without delay at the so-called Fast-Bag-Drop stations. These services rest on a deliberately redundant technical infrastructure provided by FBB
