As part of this push, the island nation held a series of dynamic roadshows in LucknowChandigarh, and Jaipur from June 23 to 27, 2025. These events were specifically designed to position Sri Lanka as a year-round destination, appealing to a wide spectrum of travelers.

The strategy combined B2B meetings and networking evenings, creating a platform for Indian travel professionals to connect directly with Sri Lankan stakeholders. Over 200 travel agents, tour operators, and media representatives from India participated, engaging in in-depth conversations and presentations about everything Sri Lanka has to offer.

Resilience and growth after challenges

After facing several global disruptions, Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has shown remarkable resilience and is now back on a strong growth trajectory. Officials emphasized that the island’s recovery wasn’t just a rebound—it was a reimagined approach to tourism that puts authentic experiences and regional connectivity at the forefront.

The delegation from Sri Lanka included over 35 industry representatives, including destination management companies, leading hotels, resorts, tour operators, and service providers. Their presence highlighted the depth and readiness of the country’s tourism infrastructure.

Showcasing diverse attractions

The roadshows were not just about numbers—they were a vibrant showcase of Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Attendees were treated to performances by a traditional Sri Lankan dance troupe, immersing them in the island’s colorful and captivating traditions.

Tourism statistics further supported the campaign’s intent. From January 1 to May 31, 2025, Sri Lanka welcomed 1,029,803 tourists. Of those, 204,060 were from India, making up a solid 20% of total arrivals. These figures confirmed India’s position as the largest source market for Sri Lankan tourism.

Perhaps more notably, tourism revenues during the first six months of 2025 exceeded USD 1.54 billion, showcasing both high visitor volumes and strong spending behavior. These numbers highlighted the successful alignment of targeted marketing with real-world outcomes.

Easy access and seamless travel

One of the key drivers behind this success has been visa-free travel for Indian citizens, which greatly simplifies the decision to travel. Add to that a strong aviation network, and it’s clear why Indian travelers are flocking to Sri Lanka.

The national airline operates approximately 90 flights a week between Sri Lanka and nine Indian cities, ensuring short travel durations and frequent departures. Additionally, major Indian carriers run daily flights from various metropolitan hubs, enhancing the ease of access.

This well-established air corridor reduces travel friction, making weekend getaways and short breaks entirely feasible for Indian tourists.

Strengthening bilateral ties

Officials stated that the roadshows were more than promotional campaigns—they were relationship-building exercises. By fostering deeper cooperation between Indian and Sri Lankan tourism professionals, these events aim to create long-term partnerships that benefit both markets.

Through strategic B2B interactions, travel providers on both sides explored potential tour packages, corporate travel deals, and joint promotional campaigns. Such collaborations are expected to result in more customized travel experiences and better on-the-ground coordination.

This outreach is part of Sri Lanka’s larger plan to strengthen ties with India, aligning with its broader strategy of regional tourism integration and economic diplomacy.
