Vancouver In Canada Holds Onto Its Hotel Leadership Position While Cities Like Toronto And Calgary See Fluctuations

Vancouver continues to stand out as Canada’s strongest hotel market, maintaining its leadership position even as other major cities like Toronto and Calgary face fluctuating performance. While Vancouver benefits from consistent demand, high occupancy rates, and a steady stream of both leisure and business travelers, Toronto and Calgary are experiencing variable market conditions influenced by shifting travel patterns, economic uncertainty, and seasonal demand. This divergence highlights Vancouver’s resilience and growing appeal in a competitive national hospitality landscape.

Despite a nationwide dip in travel, Vancouver continues to dominate Canada’s hotel scene, outshining rivals in both occupancy rates and pricing—even without the help of headline-grabbing concerts or celebrity events.

Newly released data suggests it takes an exceptional occasion to dethrone Metro Vancouver as the country’s most expensive and best-performing hotel market. The last time Toronto edged ahead was in November when the city hosted six sold-out Taylor Swift shows.

In February, Alberta’s two largest cities—Edmonton and Calgary—ranked lowest among major Canadian markets in both average hotel occupancy and room rates.

Vancouver remains Canada’s hotel market leader, showing consistent growth, while cities like Toronto and Calgary face fluctuations due to changing travel patterns and economic factors. This contrast underscores Vancouver’s strong and stable position in the national hospitality scene.

Although Vancouver continued to lead Canada’s hotel sector in February, the momentum wasn’t as strong as it was the previous year.

This marks the first year-over-year drop in international arrivals since March 2021, when global travel was still reeling from the early impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
