LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – In a strategic effort to bolster tourism and attract foreign investment, the Zambian government announced on December 18 the expansion of its visa-free policy to encompass an additional 53 countries, including Morocco, effective January 1, 2025. This initiative aims to enhance Zambia’s appeal as a destination for international travelers and investors.
During a press conference, Zambia’s Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Hon. Jack Mwiimbu, highlighted that this expansion raises the total number of countries whose nationals can enter Zambia without a visa to 167. Hon. Mwiimbu underscored that this decision is in line with H. President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision of positioning Zambia as an attractive hub for tourism, business, trade, and investment.
Hon. Cuthbert Ncube, Executive Chairman of the African Tourism Board, expressed his enthusiasm for Zambia’s progressive approach to tourism. “This milestone reflects Zambia’s commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for travelers from around the globe. By simplifying entry requirements, Zambia is not only enhancing its tourism appeal but also stimulating economic growth through increased foreign investments,” Hon. Ncube remarked.
This announcement builds upon the impressive growth in Zambia’s tourism sector, with projections indicating that tourist arrivals could reach 1.9 million by November 2024. This upward trajectory underscores the country’s potential as a premier travel destination, celebrated for its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage.
As Zambia prepares to implement this new visa policy, industry stakeholders are optimistic about its positive impact on the tourism sector and the broader economy. The African Tourism Board continues to endorse initiatives that promote travel within the continent, acknowledging the crucial role tourism plays in driving sustainable development across Africa.
With this strategic initiative, Zambia is well-positioned to strengthen its presence on the global tourism stage, inviting travelers and investors to explore its myriad attractions.
The African Tourism Board remains committed to collaborating with regional countries to develop sustainable tourism practices that enhance local economies while preserving cultural heritage and natural resources. Zambia’s latest initiative is anticipated to inspire other nations to adopt similar policies, thereby enhancing Africa’s allure as a global tourist destination.
The expansion of visa-free access aligns with broader efforts to promote intra-African travel, enabling citizens of the continent to explore neighboring countries and fostering a sense of unity and shared identity. Moving forward, the African Tourism Board is dedicated to advocating for policies that eliminate travel barriers and create more inclusive opportunities for all.
Zambia’s bold initiative exemplifies the profound impact of visionary leadership within the tourism sector. It establishes a benchmark for innovative policymaking that can drive economic development while fostering a more interconnected and culturally enriched world. The African Tourism Board looks forward to witnessing the transformative effects of this decision and is eager to collaborate with Zambia and other nations to unlock the full potential of tourism in Africa.
