CAA unveils guide to assist air travelers amidst common flight disruptions

Today, the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) unveiled a user-friendly guide aimed at assisting air travelers in managing common issues encountered during their journeys, including flight delays, cancellations, lost baggage, and involuntary flight bumps. “Travelling can be complex, and the rules protecting air travellers are complicated. CAA is stepping up by providing Canadians with the information they need when things go wrong,” says Ian Jack, vice president, public affairs for CAA National.

For several years, Canada has implemented federal regulations overseeing air passenger rights. However, these regulations are extensive and convoluted, spanning over 60 pages. To simplify matters, the CAA has introduced the Air Passenger Help Guide, offering a user-friendly resource to address common flight disruptions in five clicks or fewer. Travellers seeking clarity on what airlines owe them can easily consult our guide for assistance.

“CAA runs one of Canada’s largest leisure-travel agencies and has been a strong advocate of strengthening passenger protections. CAA has been pushing the federal government to simplify the rules to make them easier to use,” says Jack. “But until then, CAA’s Air Passenger Help Guide will be there to help air travellers when something goes wrong.”

A recent survey conducted by CAA reveals that more than six out of ten (61%) Canadians report experiencing a flight disruption themselves or through someone they know within the past two years.

In its role advocating for the rights of travelers, CAA has been actively urging the government to fulfill its promise of disclosing airline performance statistics, such as punctuality and baggage handling, allowing Canadians to assess performance independently. Over 80% of Canadians support this call for transparency, expressing their desire for the federal government and airlines to publish such data.

For assistance and guidance during travel mishaps, CAA offers its Air Passenger Help Guide, available at CAA.ca/AirPassengerHelpGuide. Travelers are encouraged to refer to this resource when encountering issues to understand their rights and applicable regulations.

The survey conducted by CAA involved 2,503 Canadians surveyed from October 20 to 30, 2023. A probability sample of the same size would have a margin of error of +/-2%.
