UNWTO World Tourism Barometer: International tourist arrivals up 4% in the first half of 2016

couple peace hotel
International tourist arrivals worldwide grew by 4% between January and June 2016 compared to the same period last year. Destinations worldwide received 561 million international tourists (overnight visitors), 21 million more than in 2015, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer.
Asia and the Pacific demonstrated renewed strength this first half of 2016, receiving 9% more international arrivals, the highest growth across world regions. In the Americas, international arrivals increased by 4%, led by Central America and South America. Europe (+3%) showed mixed results, with solid growth in many destinations offset by weaker performance in others. In Africa (+5%), Sub-Saharan destinations rebounded strongly, while North Africa continued to report weak results. Limited data for the Middle East points to an estimated decrease of 9% in international arrivals this six-month period, though results vary from destination to destination.
“Tourism has proven to be one of the most resilient economic sectors worldwide. It is creating jobs for millions, at a time when providing perspectives for a better future to people of all regions is one of our biggest challenges. But tourism is also creating bonds among people of all nations and backgrounds, bringing down stereotypes and fighting fear and distrust”, said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai.
“Safety and security are key pillars of tourism development and we need to strengthen our common action to build a safe, secure and seamless travel framework. This is no time to build walls or point fingers; it is time to build an alliance based on a shared vision and a joint responsibility.” he added.
Regional Results
Growth accelerated in Asia and the Pacific with international arrivals up 9% through June, driven by robust intraregional demand. Oceania (+10%) led growth, followed by North-East Asia, South-East Asia (both +9%) and South Asia (+7%).
International tourist arrivals to Europe grew by 3% between January and June 2016, with mixed results across destinations. Northern Europe and Central and Eastern Europe both recorded 5% more international arrivals. Though many destinations posted positive results, growth in both Western Europe (+1%) and Southern Mediterranean Europe (+2%) was slow.
International arrivals in the Americas were up 4% in the first half of the year, in line with the world average. Strong US outbound flows continued to benefit many destinations across the region. Central America and South America (both +6%) led growth, while arrivals in both the Caribbean and North America grew by 4%.
Comparatively limited data available for Africa points to a 5% increase in international arrivals, with Sub-Saharan Africa (+12%) recovering vigorously, but North Africa down by 9%. International arrivals in the Middle East decreased by an estimated 9%, with mixed results among destinations.
Positive prospects for the second half of the year
The first half of the year typically accounts for around 46% of the total international arrivals count of the year. For the remainder of 2016 prospects are positive overall. Countries that have already reported results till July or August show continued growth in the current Northern Hemisphere summer peak season. The UNWTO Panel of Experts evaluated the period May-August also favourably and remains confident about the September-December period, in line with the trend of the first half of the year. Confidence is highest in Africa, the Americas and Asia and the Pacific, while experts in Europe and the Middle East are somewhat more cautious.
Demand for travel abroad varies across source markets
China, the world’s top source market, continued to report double-digit growth in expenditure on international travel (+20% in the first quarter of 2016), benefiting destinations in the region and beyond. The United States, the world’s second largest market, increased expenditure on outbound travel by 8% through July, thanks to a strong currency. Third largest market, Germany, reported a 4% increase in expenditure through July. Other markets that showed robust demand for outbound travel in the first half of 2016 were Spain (+20%), Norway (+11%), Australia (+10%) and Japan (+6%). Meanwhile expenditure from the Russian Federation and Brazil continues to be weak, reflecting the economic constraints and depreciated currencies in both markets

WTTC predicts Sri Lanka’s Travel & Tourism GDP to grow 6.3%, Dusit Thani invests in Sri Lanka

dusitthani srilanka beachfront
After years of civil war, a new stability has returned to the island. It is now officially one of the fastest growing tourist markets in the world. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) forecasts Sri Lanka’s Travel & Tourism GDP will grow 6.3% /yr over the coming decade and by 2026 the industry will be worth LKR130 bn to the country’s economy.
New developments face challenges, but the Sri Lankan government is increasingly sympathetic to the right kind of projects.
One of the keys to achieving success is securing an efficient investment model. The inaugural Asia Hotel and Tourism Investment Conference (AHTIC), organised by Bench Events in Colombo, will discuss the best way forward, not only in Sri Lanka, but in developing markets across the region.
The gathering of international investors, business leaders, government ministers and officials will share information and intelligence during the three-day conference in November. It is being supported by Sri Lanka’s president, Maithripala Sirisena, as patron. The official opening was held in the presidential residence.
One of the hot topics on the agenda will be discussion of a recent tourism project, as a case study… Eight acres of pristine beach-front land, within ninety minutes of an international airport, is soon to become Sri Lanka’s largest multi-purpose property development outside Colombo. But how was the project achieved and what lessons are there for the investors in the rest of the region?
The island development is the first venture into Sri Lanka by the luxury Thai hotel and apartment operator, Dusit Thani. Work on the “Beachfront Balapitiya”, an apartment and hotel complex, is due to get underway in January 2017.
Just how crucial it has been to get the project right is highlighted by Sri Lanka’s growing tourist numbers – a record two million expected this year, and the government anticipates a doubling of that figure by 2020.
It is being marketed worldwide with a good response from investors eager to take advantage of Sri Lanka’s recovery.
They are being attracted by guaranteed six per cent net returns for five years, paid quarterly in US dollars; freehold titles for owners, as well as substantial capital gains potential of around 30 per cent. It is the only five-star beach-front property available to foreign investors, with 480 metres of private beach.
The fact that Sri Lanka is one of the fastest growing tourist markets in the world makes it an obvious choice for developments which fill a demand for international-standard luxury properties. Most of those expected to arrive are so-called “flashpackers” – wealthier backpacker-style travellers on a good budget.
Ajit Wijesinghe, Director, Indola Group, which developed the resort, explained: “The early challenges were considerable: finding land with a clear title, and negotiating direct access to four beaches on Sri Lanka’s west coast, uninterrupted by an existing railway and highway. But there was also fortuitous timing: the building of the Southern and the Airport expressways, the end of years of conflict on the island and the advent of a more stable economic and political era.”
There will be more than 120 apartments, with the first phase - two of an eventual four towers - due to be completed in December 2018. It is being marketed primarily as a resort, but will also be offered as a pure investment opportunity. Facilities will include all-day dining restaurants, spa and wellness centre, fitness centre and five swimming pools, including a rooftop pool and bar. The second phase will host a further 364 units with the addition of a beach club, tennis court, multi-faith chapel and 2,500 square metre convention centre.
Dusit Thani is considering further developments in Sri Lanka, but like other companies trying to attract investors it is seeking more initiatives from government.
The company wants to see an easier visa system allowing longer stays. It is urging the government to encourage complementary businesses that focus on leisure, such as sports and shopping, so people are more likely to make return trips, even in the low season during the European summer. It also wants to run more hospitality schools to nurture local talent – the company is already operating many such establishments across the region.
If these factors are in place, Dusit Thani is predicting even bigger tourist growth for Sri Lanka –, and that is giving many investors cause for thought.
Rustom Vickers, Vice President, Dusit International, Development will be speaking at AHTIC in the Hilton Colombo, November 27-29. He will be in conversation with directors of Indola Group Ltd, Paul Dwyer and Ajit Wijesinghe, the project’s Australian co-developers.
Bench Events managing director, Matthew Weihs, said: “This is a fast-growing tourism development region. Dusit’s Sri Lanka case study will provide one of many substantial opportunities throughout the conference to scrutinise the market and to exchange ideas on how best business and government can work together to make the most of Sri Lanka’s fantastic tourism assets.”

airberlin to lay off 1200, hands 40 jets to Lufthansa

Αποτέλεσμα εικόνας για airberlin to lay off 1200, hands 40 jets to Lufthansa
airberlin, Germany's second-largest airline, announced on Wednesday a major restructuring plan that shrinks its fleet and cuts 1200 jobs.
The carrier announced that it will concentrate its core operations as a dedicated, focused network carrier serving higher-yielding markets, from its two key hubs in Berlin and Dusseldorf, with a core fleet of 75 aircraft.
To employ excess aircraft and crew capacity, airberlin intends to provide up to 40 Airbus A320 family aircraft to the Lufthansa Group with up to 38 aircraft to be wet-leased under a six year wet-lease agreement.
The restructuring follows a comprehensive, bottom-up review of all operations, seeking to improve efficiency, limit seasonality and re-establish a clear market proposition for the airline.
airberlin’s core operations will be served by a fleet of 75 aircraft from summer 2017, consisting of 17 A330 wide body aircraft for long-haul flights, 40 A320 family aircraft and 18 Q400 aircraft for short-/medium-haul flights including to major business centres throughout Europe.
Fewer staff will be required, with up to 1,200 positions becoming redundant. The company will enter discussions with works councils’ representatives with an aim to confirm voluntary and compulsory redundancies by February 2017.
airberlin’s touristic flying operations will be operated in a separate touristic-focused business unit, as strategic options are evaluated.
With the announcement of the new strategy, airberlin also announced that it intends to provide up to 40 A320 aircraft to the Deutsche Lufthansa Group, with up to 38 aircraft to be operated under a six year wet lease agreement or ACMIO arrangement, which includes aircraft, crew, maintenance, insurance and overhead services. This arrangement allows airberlin to reduce excess capacity while reducing restructuring costs. The wet lease is to be fully operational by the 2017 summer season.
Going forward, airberlin’s profitable long-haul programme will be expanded with new routes and additional frequencies, particularly to the United States.
The airline’s short- and medium-haul programme will concentrate on year-round business markets with a strong focus on Italy, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. It will also aim to build a higher share of domestic business travel.
airberlin will collaborate closely with the works councils and trade unions which will be involved throughout the process of change.
airberlin intends, subject to all required co-determination rights of the employee representatives, to offer voluntary redundancies where possible. Redeployment opportunities within the Etihad Airways Partners group of airlines, which include Jet Airways, Air Serbia, Etihad Regional, Alitalia, Air Seychelles and Etihad Airways, will endeavour to be offered to airberlin employees.

Dominican Republic continues to grow reputation as international golfing destination

Αποτέλεσμα εικόνας για Dominican Republic continues to grow reputation as international golfing destination

Dominican Republic's lush landscapes contrasted against stunning aquamarine shores create an idyllic setting for some of the world's most breathtaking golf courses. Golfers are taking note, traveling from the U.S. and beyond to golf the greens of Dominican Republic's one-of-a-kind courses.

For U.S. golfers, it's easier than ever to reach Dominican Republic. Cities including Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago and Houston offer direct flights, so golfers can plan tee times for the days they arrive or depart. Dominican Republic's tourist-friendly golf courses help visitors save time and eliminate the hassle of packing clubs by offering professional grade rentals at all locations.

"Dominican Republic is the perfect destination for golf travel, with our stunning and varied natural landscapes that provide breathtaking backdrops for our courses. Combined with an ideal year-round climate, spectacular entertainment and warm, hospitable people, it's easy to see why we are the Caribbean's can't-miss golf destination," said Magaly Toribio, Marketing Advisor for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. "We host many individuals and golf events throughout the year that showcase all the reasons Dominican Republic is known as the Caribbean capital of golf."

This month, Dominican Republic hosted 97 golfers from around the globe for the third annual DR Golf Travel Exchange, held Sept. 10 through Sept. 15 at the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe in Punta Cana. The Exchange showcased Punta Cana and La Romana's immense offerings for golfers, with highlights including many of the country's 86 picturesque holes on or overlooking the sea and ease of access to golf resorts from the country's international airports, and in-between courses once in country. Course highlights included: P.B. Dye's Iberostate Golf at the Iberostar Grand Punta Cana in Bavaro—a course that creates eye-catching contrasts with white sand and rock against the intensely green Paspalum grass; Dye Fore in Casa de Campo Resort in La Romana, an area known as a must-visit golf destination with fairways and greens worthy of the all-stars; and The Lakes at Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe, which was the first golf course in the entire Punta Cana tourist region.

Golfers looking to explore outside of Punta Cana and La Romana can take in other destination courses from around the country. Santo Domingo is a stone's throw from pristine golf courses such as Guavaberry Golf & Country Club in Juan Dolio, an enchanting course with a crystal-clear waterfall at the 13th hole and 200,000-year-old coral rock formations at the final hole. Near Puerto Plata, courses including Playa Dorada and Playa Grande —the final masterpiece of Robert Trent Jones, Sr.—beckon to golfers that prefer staying on the country's north coast, known for adventure activities and water sports.
