Regulation catches up with innovation – The Case of short-term rentals

Αποτέλεσμα εικόνας για Regulation catches up with innovation – The Case of short-term rentals

MADRID, SPAIN - The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has published the first systematic overview of how both national governments and local authorities are addressing and managing new business models in the accommodation industry. The so-called “sharing economy” has experienced significant growth over recent years and is poised to outpace the growth of traditional accommodation. Drawing on case studies from around the world, “New Business Models in the Accommodation Industry” analyses existing rules and regulations for the sector.
Drawing on 21 global case studies, the new UNWTO report notes that most of the measures implemented refer to areas of ‘fair competition’ and ‘consumer protection’, specifically measures related to taxation and registration and permits In comparison, measures relating to ‘planning and sustainability’, are less commonplace. At the same time, the report highlights the challenges destinations face in implementing rules and regulations, with a lack of local capacity and a lack of clarity over whose responsibility it is to monitor and regulate short-term tourist accommodation.
Commenting, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “There are significantly more regulations than we thought and it is encouraging to see destinations taking the initiative. However, many challenges remain, including the practical implementation of rules and regulations relating to the short-term tourist rental market. Good governance and effective cooperation between the public and private sectors are key to successfully meeting these challenges.”
Case studies analysed for the “New Business Models in the Accommodation Industry” include European countries such as the Netherlands, Italy and Spain, which are home to some of the world’s most popular cities for tourists, as well as countries in the Americas such as Mexico and from across Asia as is the case of Japan.
The report was produced with the support of the Secretariat of Tourism of Mexico.

Saudi Arabia to enable unmarried tourists to share hotel rooms

Αποτέλεσμα εικόνας για Saudi Arabia to enable unmarried tourists to share hotel rooms

Saudi Arabia is now going to enable unmarried tourists to share hotel rooms in a bid to boost up its international tourism and diversify its economy.

The Saudi Commissioner for Tourism and National Heritage (SCNTH) has recently notified new regulations for tourist accommodations. Earlier, couples had to provide proof of their marriage to share hotel rooms. However, this rule has been relaxed for international visitors while Saudi nationals will have to stick by this rule.

As per the new rules, foreign women travelling alone will also be able to book rooms for the first time. They will be required to dress up modestly though. They will have to keep their shoulders and knees covered in public while it will be their own choice whether or not to wear the full-body Abaya.

Earlier, even international female visitors needed to be accompanied by a man for Hajj pilgrimage if they were under 45 year.

The new directive comes amid deep reforms over the past year by the Saudi crown prince, Mohammad Bin Salman, who had lifted a ban on cinemas in the kingdom and the world’s only ban on women’s driving.

Saudi Arabia aims to attract an annual 100 million visitors (international and domestic) by 2030, with tourism contributing up to 10 per cent of GDP. The Arab kingdom is building new resorts and theme parks and also promoting its archaeological treasures to promote tourism.

However, its poor record on human rights, security concerns heightened by recent attacks on its oil industry and last year’s killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi- are taking a toll on the tourism sector.

As of now, over 2 million Muslim visitors make the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

The new rules say that the Muslim visitors may make Umrah (a pilgrimage to Mecca taken at any time of year) on a tourist visa but they will still need specific Visas for a Hajj pilgrimage.

August Sees Moderate Pick-up in Passenger Demand

Αποτέλεσμα εικόνας για August Sees Moderate Pick-up in Passenger Demand

Geneva - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced global passenger traffic data for August 2019 showing that demand (measured in total revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) climbed 3.8% compared to the year-ago period. This was above the 3.5% annual increase for July. August capacity (available seat kilometers or ASKs) increased by 3.5%. Load factor climbed 0.3% percentage point to 85.7%, which was a new monthly record, as airlines continue to maximize asset use.

“While we saw a pick-up in passenger demand in August compared to July, growth remains below the long-term trend and well-down on the roughly 8.5% annual growth seen over the 2016 to Q1 2018 period. This reflects the impact of economic slowdowns in some key markets, uncertainty over Brexit and the trade war between the US and China. Nonetheless, airlines are doing a great job of matching capacity to demand. With passenger load factors reaching a new high of 85.7% this is good for overall efficiency and passengers’ individual carbon footprint,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

August international passenger demand rose 3.3% compared to August 2018, improved from a 2.8% year-over-year growth achieved in July. With the exception of Latin America, all regions recorded increases, led by airlines in Africa. Capacity climbed 2.9%, and load factor edged up 0.3 percentage point to 85.6%.

  • Asia-Pacific airlines’ August traffic increased 3.5% compared to the year-ago period, which was an acceleration compared to a 2.6% rise in July. However, this remains well below the long-term average growth rate of around 6.5%, reflecting slowing economic growth in India and Australia as well as the impact of trade disputes. Capacity rose 3.9% and load factor slid 0.4 percentage point to 82.8%.

  • European carriers saw August demand climb 3.7% year-to-year, fractionally up over a 3.6% increase for July. Capacity rose 3.4%, and load factor climbed 0.2 percentage point to 89.0%, which was the highest among regions. Slowing economic growth in key markets such as the UK and Germany, as well as uncertainties and disparate business confidence outcomes are behind the softer conditions for the continent’s air carriers.

  • Middle Eastern airlines posted a 2.9% traffic increase in August, which was an increase from a 1.7% rise in July. While this was better than the average of the past twelve months, it remains far below the double-digit growth trend of recent years. Falling business confidence in parts of the region, combined with some key airlines going through a process of structural change and geopolitical tensions are all likely to be contributing factors. Capacity increased 1.3%, with load factor rising 1.3 percentage points to 82.4%.

  • North American carriers’ international demand rose 2.5% compared to August a year ago, up from a 1.4% increase in July. Capacity rose 1.3%, and load factor grew by 1.0 percentage point to 88.3%. As with the Middle East and Asia Pacific, this performance represents an improvement from July, but remains relatively soft compared to long-term norms, most likely reflecting trade tensions and slowing global demand.

  • Latin American airlines experienced a 2.3% demand increase in August compared to the same month last year, down from a 4.0% annual growth in July. Argentina’s financial and currency crises, combined with challenging economic conditions in Brazil and Mexico, contributed to the depressed performance. Capacity fell 0.3% and load factor surged 2.1 percentage points to 83.9%.

  • African airlines’ traffic climbed 4.1% in August, up from 3.2% in July. This solid performance comes after South Africa – the region’s second largest economy – returned to positive economic growth in Q2 2019. Capacity rose 6.1%, however, and load factor dipped 1.4 percentage points to 75.6%.

Demand for domestic travel climbed 4.7% in August compared to August 2018, unchanged from the previous month. Capacity rose 4.6% and load factor increased 0.1 percentage point to 85.9%.

The Bottom Line

The 40th Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) ended last week with significant progress made by governments in support of the industry’s environmental goals. The Assembly passed a resolution that reaffirmed and strengthened its support for the successful implementation of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA)—the world’s first global carbon offsetting scheme—that begins in 2020. It also directed the ICAO Council to report to the next Assembly on options for the adoption of a long-term aspirational goal for reducing carbon emissions from international aviation.

“It’s been 10 years since the aviation industry agreed a long-term goal to cut aviation emissions to half the levels of 2005 by 2050. This Assembly marks the first time that ICAO member states have agreed to consider a long-term goal for governments to reduce aviation emissions—a move that is strongly welcomed by airlines, who recognize that sustainability is critical to earning aviation’s license to grow and to continue spreading its many economic and social benefits.

“From 2020—with the help of CORSIA—the sector’s growth will be carbon-neutral. And with the strong support of governments in areas such as commercializing sustainable aviation fuels and improving the efficiency of air traffic management, we will continue working toward our long-term goal,” said de Juniac.

Top Cruise Line Executives optimistic about the potential for growth in China and Asia Pacific

Seatrade Cruise Asia Pacific- the leading trade event for the Asia Pacific cruise industry had it’s opening session today with a strong message to delegates that high quality, long-term growth and sustainability are amongst the key priorities for 2019.
The opening session was host to a strong panel of industry executives that featured Colin Au, Group President, Genting Hong Kong; Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International; Arnold Donald, President and CEO, Carnival Corporation & plc. and Pierfrancesco Vago Executive Chairman, MSC Cruises.
During the opening remarks, Bayley commented ‘If I had one word to describe the Asia Pacific cruise industry, it would be astonishing; China is the driver of significant progress in the market’.
He also announced the name of its 5th Oasis Class ship ‘Wonder of the Seas’ which will debut from its homeport of Shanghai in mid-2021. The 227,000gt vessel is being built at Chantiers de l’Atlantique and further outlines Royal Caribbean’s commitment to the China market.
The session opened with moderator Mary Bond Group Director of Seatrade who firstly asked if it was fair to say that the cruise industry has confidence in the China cruise market following the positive opening remarks from all the panellists and if there were any challenges to overcome looking to the future.
“We are at the beginning of a journey”, stated Vago who clarified the importance of developing the China cruise offering to mirror those elsewhere in the world where cruises present a variety of on-board experiences with “a choice of restaurant each evening” and the prospect of “waking up to a new city each day”.
Moderator Bond continued the session by asking how cruise lines view the wider Asia Pacific market and what their strategy was for these markets?
“There’s so much opportunity. I do see growth here”, commented Donald. “The test is to convey what cruise really is in China”, he continued, “It is one of the most vibrant areas of the world.”
He explained the importance of marketing such as social media and the power of the word of mouth, “Social media is a great tool to share spirit and to inspire. People trust people - once the Chinese start cruising they won’t stop.”
Wrapping up the session, moderator Bond asked each of the executives when they thought China may take over as the number one global source market.
Colin Au, Group President, Genting Hong Kong; was bullish about China’s growth potential: “Many people think that China can surpass the US in 2030 to become the world's largest cruise source market,” he remarked. “But the current 12m US passengers is six times that of China at 2m cruise passengers so we feel it is impossible to surpass the US in 2030.”
He continued, “if China continues to grow at a 10% steady annual growth and the US has a slower mature 4% growth, then China will need 30 years to surpass the US, so it will take until 2049.”
Donald estimated that China could become the number one source market by 2030; nearly 20 years before Au’s prediction but stressed it was dependant on available capacity.
The 2030 prediction was also echoed by Vago who stated that “the key to promote growth in the Chinese market is to build partnerships”. The panel discussion ended with Bayley who humoured the delegate audience that packed the Delta Hotel Ballroom with a projection that China would take the number one spot in 2029.
Seatrade Cruise Asia Pacific continues until Friday 11 October 2019 at The Delta Hotels by Marriott, Baoshan, Shanghai, China.

Khiri Travel Launches ‘Luxury’ Three-Lakes Walking Trip in Myanmar

Khiri Travel Myanmar has announced a flexible walking and boating itinerary of around four days in the highlands of southern Shan State of Myanmar. The trip gives tour operators alternative options in the Inle Lake region.
In a first for Myanmar, Khiri Travel has linked Pekon, Samkar and Inle lakes in one trip inspired by the ‘chalet to chalet’ trekking of Switzerland and New Zealand. In Myanmar the hiking is easier with guests’ luggage being transferred ahead each day to accommodation, which is typically a lodge with comfortable rooms, proper bed linens and private w/c.
The trips use local boats to link rewarding sections of hiking of about 15km a day. The walks are doable by anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. Some of the most memorable highlights of the trip are the Shan food discoveries along the way, says Khiri Travel Myanmar Managing Director, Edwin Briels, who researched and created the trip.
“Home-made pumpkin soup, bamboo shoot and zucchini leaves salad with crushed peanuts and farm-made Shan noodles were among my favourite dishes along the way,” he says. “The trip is a perfect combination of food, views, forest walks, cultural insights and a well-earned lakeside sunset drink at the end of the day.”
The north-south trip alternates between east and west bank of the lakes. Some sections are high in the hills with great views. Some parts go through lakeside villages with markets, monasteries and pagodas. The landscape is diverse, ranging from plantations and paddy terraces to bamboo forests, community woods and Pa O tribal villages rarely visited by overseas visitors.
For travel agents and tour operators, Briels says Khiri Travel is the first DMC to offer ‘luxury’ multi-day tours in the three-lake area, instead of just focussing on Inle. It’s also a more upmarket alternative to the Kalaw to Inle Lake hiking route popular with backpackers.
To experience a heightened connection on the trip, Briels recommends visitors read Children of the Revolution by Feroze Dada. It is a true story from the area about a visitor who meets a freedom fighter and a monk. They inspire the author and his wife to help over 600 children living a monastery in the southern part of Inle Lake.
Khiri Travel’s flexible three-lake itinerary is available for travel agents to view here. Tour operators and travel agents seeking more information should email: myanmar@khiri.com.

TIME Hotels launches new health and wellness initiative

Healthy You – Healthy World! TIME Hotels expands wellness offerings across UAE properties

UAE-based hospitality group introduces variety of new fitness and wellness activities for both in-house guests and staff members as well as new health conscious menu

UAE-headquartered hospitality company, TIME Hotels, has launched a new health and wellness initiative - ‘Healthy You. Healthy World’ – across all of its properties in line with its Tomorrow’s World Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

As part of the initiative, TIME Hotels has expanded its offering of fitness and wellness activities, introduced a new health conscious menu and participated in a wide variety of activities to help promote healthy lifestyles for both employees and in-house guests.

At TIME Oak Hotel & Suites, an aqua fitness programme for female senior citizens has been introduced, taking place daily from 7am to 9am; while at TIME Ruby Hotel Apartments boxing classes are taking place twice a week for members and in-house guests; and at TIME Grand Plaza swimming lessons are available for both adults and children – taking place seven days a week between 8am and 9am.

Mohamed Awadalla, CEO, TIME Hotels, said: “Every year TIME Hotels participates in a range of activities to raise awareness of several important regional and global initiatives while also taking the opportunity to support the health and wellness of both our employees and of course our guests.

“Everything we do is focused on having a positive impact and creating a legacy which generations will be able to learn from for many years to come.”

Adding to this, Mugs & Munch, a relaxed pastry café and lobby lounge, has created a new healthy menu with a focus on fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Featuring a variety of healthy munch bowls, freshly baked flat bread sandwiches and delicious pastries as well as an extensive tea and coffee menu, fresh fruit smoothies, mocktails and cold soft beverages.

Located in the lobby of TIME Oak Hotel & Suites, Mugs & Munch is the perfect venue for those looking for a quick coffee and an on-the-go nutritious snack, a relaxed catch-up with a friend or an informal business meeting.

Awadalla said: “Creating a menu which offers interesting and healthy food options, with a focus on fresh and local ingredients, is incredibly important to us as we continuously work to broaden our F&B offerings at TIME Oak Hotel & Suites.

“The idea behind the Mugs & Munch menu is to deliver fresh and delicious dishes for those who don’t want to compromise on taste – but still want to be healthy.”

TIME Hotels has also strengthened the positive impact it is making on both employees and guests’ fitness and wellness through an impressive calendar of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

In line with the ‘Healthy You. Healthy World’ campaign, TIME has painted motivational health and wellness quotes on each step between the ground floor and first floor in each of its properties to encourage staff and guests to use the stairs instead of the elevator wherever possible.

Earlier this year, TIME hosted a Yoga Day for both staff and in-house guests and as part of World Health Day, TIME conducted a health check-up, in collaboration with Call Doctor. In all hotels, staff members and in-house guests had access to a free check-up and consultation with a doctor, as well as a training session on the subject of ‘healthy lifestyle’.

Awadalla concluded: “Our overall aim is to promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle and add value to both our in-house guests and our employees’ lives through enhanced offerings at each of our properties, education and employee engagement activities.”

Windstar Cruises Announces 2021 Alaska Sailings and Cruise Tours

Small ship cruise line’s most highly rated cruise destination now has a seven-day itinerary option, plus two new Signature Expeditions excursions locations
Seattle, WA, October 2019 — Windstar Cruises announces its 2021 Alaska season today, offering nine different journeys from June through September on four unique itineraries, including a new seven-day option from Vancouver to Juneau and the reverse. Scenic Alaska will feature coastal wilderness cruising along the Canadian Inside Passage, as well as time in Alaska’s Misty Fjords plus Tracy or Endicott Arms, with stops in Ketchikan, Sitka, Skagway (a first-time port for Windstar), and Juneau. Windstar also will offer far-reaching Cruise Tours for the comprehensive Alaska experience combining coastal cruises with overland explorations to Denali and Fairbanks in 2021.
“We achieved the highest guest ratings in the company’s history during our second season in Alaska in 2019, proving that Windstar is the absolute best way to experience the majesty of Alaska,” says John Delaney, President of Windstar Cruises. “I was fortunate to have the opportunity to sail for a few days during our Alaska season and was able to visit the small native community of the Inian Islands and to kayak deep up in Tracy Arm – it was an incredible experience that is truly a life-changing adventure. Our 2019 season sold out quickly, and we encourage people to book early for 2021,” he added.
While Windstar’s popular 11 (and more)-day itineraries in Alaska allow plenty of time for scenic cruising and in-depth exploration, Windstar’s new seven-day cruise is in response to guest demand for shorter options to explore Alaska in an immersive way. Guests will see something spectacular every day, with no days spent “at sea,” allowing them to get the most out of their Alaskan cruise in a shorter amount of time.
With new Alaska itineraries and ports comes the opportunity for new shore excursions and experiences, including exclusive offerings as part of the line’s innovative Signature Expeditions program, where a team of six experts are on board sharing the history of the region, cultural tales, scientific discoveries, and insider knowledge.
New 2021 Signature Expeditions include Zodiac cruises and kayaking in Icy Bay, a remote fjord near Prince William Sound that’s part of the Wrangell-Saint Elias Wilderness. In Barry Arm, three glaciers flow from the Chugach Mountains into the fjord, making the area magnificently picturesque. The location is perfect for Zodiac cruises and kayaking with Windstar’s Expedition Team because the area is relatively ice free with smooth waters.
New 2021 shore excursions include experiences like taking the vintage White Pass & Yukon narrow-gauge train from Skagway through a panorama of mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, tunnels, and historic sites, or embarking on a Glacier Point wilderness safari, including catamaran cruising along ice-scoured fjords, hiking through dense rainforest, and paddling a canoe on a mountain lake to the stunning face of an ice wall.
In addition to unique itineraries and excursions, Windstar also excels at bringing Alaska’s local bounty on board for guests to enjoy with their chefs’ focus on sourcing local ingredients, which will continue in 2021. These tasty items include seasonal huckleberries, reindeer and venison sausage, birch syrup, and of course seafood like King and Sockeye Salmon, Pacific Ling Cod, and King Crab.
All 2021 Windstar Alaska sailings will take place aboard the reimagined 312-passenger Star Breeze, with 50 new suites, two new restaurants, an enhanced spa and fitness center, and more. Rates for 2021 Alaska sailings and cruise tours start at $2,999 per guest.
