AIDA Cruises is driving forward efficient ship operations with shore power, biofuels and digitalization.

 

Rostock, 5. August 2026 AIDA Cruises is setting trends for the cruise industry: With biofuels, the expansion of shore power utilization, the introduction of EOS (Energy Optimization System) for greater efficiency in ship operations, and new ideas from the AIDA Innovation Hub, the company is consistently pursuing its goal of actively shaping the future of cruising.

Digital Energy Management for Greater Efficiency

Reducing the energy consumption of the AIDA fleet is a key component of its technical fleet management. To further optimize energy requirements and thus fuel consumption, operational and consumption data are continuously analyzed, and route planning and the hydrodynamic efficiency of the ships are continuously improved. All ships in the AIDA fleet have an integrated energy management system and are connected to a group-wide data platform. The information gathered there supports the teams on board and ashore in further developing ship operations in a data-driven manner. In addition, digital applications as well as machine learning and artificial intelligence methods are used to evaluate operational data and identify further optimization opportunities.

Digital Energy Management for Greater Efficiency One of the most important investments in this area is the digital analysis system EOS (Energy Optimization System), which has been gradually implemented on board the AIDA fleet since 2023. The system supports crews in near real-time with operational decisions, such as optimizing energy flows on board or calculating routes with the goal of minimizing energy consumption. Various factors are incorporated into the analyses, including wind and weather conditions, ship and engine models, and the number of guests on board. Operational experience shows that the use of EOS can significantly reduce the energy required for propulsion and various onboard systems.

"EOS demonstrates the added value that digitalization can create for ship operations. By translating data into concrete recommendations for action, we empower our crews to make even more efficient decisions. This is already resulting in savings in the millions and making our fleet fit for the future," says Dirk Inger, Senior Vice President Public Affairs, Communication & Sustainability at AIDA Cruises.

``` Expansion of Biofuel Use

“Following initial pilot projects in recent years, AIDA Cruises is further expanding its use of bio-based fuels. In 2025, more than 8,500 tons of ISCC EU-certified bio-LNG were procured for AIDAnova in the ports of Hamburg, Kiel, and Zeebrugge. The bio-LNG originates from European biogas plants and was made usable for shipping using the mass balance method,” explains Inger. Biofuels that meet the requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) can make a significant contribution in the short and medium term to achieving the climate targets of the European Union and the IMO and help fulfill the requirements of FuelEU Maritime.

At the same time, AIDA Cruises is working with partners from science and industry to prepare for the future use of e-fuels on its ships. As part of the CAMPFIRE alliance, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the company, through its decarbonization department, is participating in the research and development of new energy conversion and storage technologies based on renewable ammonia. The HydroPoLEn research project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, in which AIDA Cruises, also represented by the decarbonization department of Carnival Maritime GmbH, participates as an associated partner, aims to design hydrogen as a fuel for future ship propulsion systems with combustion engines and simultaneously investigate the resulting impact on its integration into a cruise ship.

"Overall, however, several challenges remain for the use of e-fuels, such as availability in ports, industrial-scale production capacities, internationally standardized framework conditions, and a lack of competitive market prices in Germany and Europe," says Inger.

AIDA Cruises first used biofuel on AIDAprima in the summer of 2022. In 2024, as the next step, a residue biofuel was used in a pilot project, which, according to the manufacturer, reduces CO₂ emissions by more than 90 percent. Furthermore, the LNG-powered ships of the AIDA fleet are already prepared for the future use of other biofuels and e-fuels as soon as these fuels are available in sufficient quantities.


AIDA Innovation Hub bringt neue Ideen für die maritime Branche

Die Bewerbungsphase für den neuen AIDA Innovation Hub ist abgeschlossen. Insgesamt erreichten AIDA Cruises über 150 potenzielle Ideen. Aktuell werden alle eingegangenen Projekte geprüft und die vielversprechendsten Ideen, Technologien und Konzepte für die maritime Branche ausgewählt. Zuvor waren Start-ups, Tech-Unternehmen, Branchenpartner sowie Wissenschafts- und Forschungseinrichtungen aufgerufen, sich mit Lösungen in den Bereichen Dekarbonisierung, Nachhaltigkeit sowie KI-Tools und smarte Lösungen zu bewerben. Die besten Projekte werden am 16. September 2026 vor einer Fachjury in Rostock präsentiert. Die Gewinner können ihre Ideen gemeinsam mit AIDA bei einer Umsetzungsstudie weiterverfolgen oder als Pilotprojekt an Bord testen.
