11.6 million Britons plan UK festive breaks, generating £3.3 billion for the economy

Μore than 11.6 million people in the UK are planning an overnight domestic holiday during the Christmas and New Year period, generating an estimated £3.3 billion boost to the economy, according to VisitEngland’s Christmas Trip Tracker Survey released on 18 December.

The figures represent a significant increase on last year, up by 32% from the 8.8 million Britons who planned a festive domestic break in the previous season. The data underlines a strong recovery in seasonal domestic travel and provides a positive signal for accommodation providers, attractions and destinations across England.

Among those who are definitely planning an overnight holiday trip in England, nearly half (49%) expect to take two or more trips during the festive period. The survey also shows that 7% of respondents are still undecided about taking an overnight trip, with the main reasons cited as waiting for deals or special offers, followed by uncertainty about the weather.

Commenting on the findings, VisitEngland CEO Patricia Yates said: “It is encouraging to see many of us are planning a short break with friends and family during the festive season, boosting the economy through tourism. From buzzing Christmas markets to festive light trails, from winter walks with a cosy pub lunch to seasonal favourites such as the free Blackpool Illuminations, there is an experience and attraction for everyone.”

She added that 2025 has been a challenging year for the sector. “We know from destinations across England that 2025 has been a very mixed picture as consumers wrestle with cost-of-living uncertainties and businesses with the higher cost of trading. Our latest consumer sentiment research shows that many people are booking last minute, wanting to save on accommodation, activities and seeking good value options.”

In terms of activities, visiting friends and family remains the most popular reason for festive travel. This is followed by going out for a meal (41%), visiting Christmas markets (40%) and shopping during post-Christmas sales (33%). Outdoor activities such as walking or cycling also feature strongly, with more than one in five respondents (21%) planning to spend time outdoors during their festive break.

The survey highlights notable generational differences. Younger travellers are more inclined to spend on seasonal shopping experiences, with 42% of those aged 16 to 24 planning to shop in post-Christmas sales and half (50%) intending to visit a Christmas market.
