Strengthening Aviation Safety and Innovation

The Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) and the International Federation of Air Traffic Safety Electronics Associations (IFATSEA) have signed a new Memorandum of Cooperation to work more closely together in shaping the future of aviation. The signing took place last week, 25 September, during the 42nd Session of the ICAO Assembly.

In particular, this partnership reinforces the shared commitment of both organisations to strengthen the role of Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel (ATSEP) – the specialists who keep the communications, navigation and surveillance systems behind air traffic management running safely and smoothly.

As aviation becomes more digital, automated, and complex, ATSEP professionals are essential to ensuring that new technologies are safe, secure, and reliable. Through this collaboration, CANSO and IFATSEA will:

  • Support modern training for ATSEP to address emerging technologies such as AI, cybersecurity, virtualisation, and automation.
  • Promote the ATSEP profession and collaborate on outreach, diversity, and global workforce planning, to attract and retain the next generation of professionals.
  • Share knowledge and experience across organisations to strengthen safety culture and examine how technological change will reshape ATSEP responsibilities.
  • Work together on global initiatives including the Complete Air Traffic System (CATS) Concept of Operations and ICAO programmes.

The agreement was signed by CANSO President and CEO, Simon Hocquard, and Ing. Frank Kofi Apeagyei, IFATSEA President.

As Simon Hocquard commented: This agreement underscores the essential contribution of ATSEP professionals to the safe and sustainable evolution of global aviation. Together, we will champion innovation and workforce development to support ICAO’s vision for a safe and sustainable future.”

IFATSEA President Ing. Frank Kofi Apeagyei added: “By joining forces with CANSO, we can raise awareness of the ATSEP profession, strengthen training, and help secure a sustainable future for aviation.”

Together, CANSO and IFATSEA are committed to building a future where ATSEP professionals are recognised, empowered, and ready to support a safe and innovative aviation system worldwide.
