Almaty is the second Kazakh city to join LOT Polish Airlines’ regular flight network. Kazakhstan, as the largest economy in Central Asia and one of Poland’s key trading partners in that area, is an excellent destination for our passengers thinking about expanding their businesses. With its uniquely picturesque location at the foot of the Tianshan Mountains, this region is also an interesting holiday destination. I believe that both business and tourism conditions will encourage travellers to choose this destination.

Almaty – cosmopolitan capital of apples and wildlife
Almaty is Kazakhstan’s beating heart – a centre of culture, business and art. The city enchants visitors with its posh boulevards, a wide range of restaurants and cafés, numerous museums and art galleries. Its unique architecture is also noteworthy, with monumental, history-laden buildings and wide avenues offering a compelling contrast to modern skyscrapers and the dynamic pace of contemporary life.
For the people of Almaty, apples are a true legacy and a source of local pride. No wonder then that Kazakhstan’s former capital derives its name from this noble fruit. This heritage is reflected in numerous monuments and fountains, such as the one in the city’s amusement park on Kok Tobe Hill. To enjoy the many attractions awaiting you at the summit – a 30-metre Ferris wheel, Kazakhstan’s only roller coaster, a mini zoo and a spa centre – you can take the cable car. It also offers an excellent vantage point for admiring the wonderful panorama of the city, making you feel that nature and city truly coexist in unique harmony in Almaty.

The Zailiyskiy Alatau Mountains, surrounding the city to the south, offer numerous trekking trails of varying difficulty. One of the most picturesque is the one leading to Big Almaty Lake. With its azure waters, it makes travellers feel calm and united with nature. The lake is surrounded by three four-thousand-metre peaks – Sovetov (4,317 metres above sea level), Ozyorny (4,110 metres above sea level) and Turist (3,954 metres above sea level), which further adds to the unique atmosphere of this location. Interestingly enough, the colour of this water reservoir changes depending on the season, so it is worth visiting both in summer and winter.
Art in so many ways
Almaty stands for culture. Visitors can experience art every step of the way – in surprising architecture, bustling Expo, and museum exhibits. Former Kazakhstan’s capital has something to offer both to travellers following in the footsteps of history and to those who prefer more contemporary beauty.
It is worth heading to the Ykhlas Museum of Folk Musical Instruments. The Museum hosts over 1,000 exhibits, allowing visitors to explore the entire spectrum of the local residents’ musical heritage. The tradition of making musical instruments, cultivated for centuries, remains one of the most widespread crafts in Kazakhstan to this day.
The A. Kasteyev State Museum of Arts is also noteworthy. The collection of over 23,000 artworks includes both applied art – jewellery, woodwork and woven items – and fine art – pieces by the greatest historical and contemporary artists from this part of the world.

Plates full of variety
Kazakhstan’s cuisine draws inspiration from various parts of the world, including Europe and Asia, with all these flavours arriving here via the Silk Road. That is why today, traditional regional dishes mainly consist of meat and vegetables coated in boldly selected, aromatic spices. A very substantial dish here is kuurdak – pieces of horse or mutton fried with offal and onions, sometimes also with other vegetables. Soup will also be a perfect complement, as Kazakhs simply love it. Lagman is a broth with stir-fried mutton, noodles, tomatoes and peppers. Interestingly, zero-waste cooking is of great importance to the local cuisine.
