French Riviera finally sets official cruise ship restrictions

The cruise industry has finally got some clarity over cruise ship visits to the French Riviera.

The regional prefect for Alpes-Maritimes has finalised rules over cruise ship restrictions.

It followed months of wrangling between three local governments which overlap on jurisdiction in the Bay of Cannes which covers the ports of Nice, Cannes and Villefranche.

Two authorities had issued their own cruise ship restrictions which were deemed unconstitutional.

The prefect of the Ales-Maritimes, Laurent Hottiaux, and the Maritime Prefect for the Mediterranean, Christophe Lucas conducted meetings with numerous municipal and maritime authorities to come to a consensus.

The updated ship restrictions allow ships with a 3,000-passenger limit to visit and only one per day for all ships up to 1,300 passengers.

During high season period from July to August a maximum of 15 ships per month will be permitted.

Additionally, cruise ships that adopt the ‘sustainable cruise in the Mediterranean’ charter will be prioritized where necessary.

This new sustainable cruising charter went live this year and calls for the use of more eco-friendly fuels and reduced emissions when ships are in port or anchored close by.
