Showcasing its dedication to fostering an inclusive and welcoming experience for every visitor, Destination Toledo has successfully renewed its Certification Autism Center™ (CAC) status, originally achieved in 2022. This prestigious recognition, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), is granted to organizations that undergo specialized training and certification in autism and sensory-related needs. It ensures that staff are fully prepared to assist individuals on the autism spectrum and their families with care and understanding.
“It is important for Destination Toledo and every member of our team to be certified so we can provide the best possible experience for all travelers, especially those with autism and sensory needs, while they explore our city,” said Lance Woodworth, President & CEO of Destination Toledo.
Toledo is making remarkable strides in accessibility by collaborating with local attractions, hotels, and venues to achieve a Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD) designation. This initiative is part of Destination Toledo’s mission to establish the city as a welcoming hub for autistic and sensory-sensitive travelers.
Toledo has already set milestones in accessibility. Toledo Express Airport (TOL) became the first airport in the nation to earn the Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation last year. Additionally, earlier this year, TARTA Move, the paratransit division of the Toledo Regional Transit Authority (TARTA), became the first transit agency in Ohio to receive CAC certification. This achievement earned TARTA the Collaborative Excellence Award from the Ohio Public Transit Association, recognizing its partnership with Destination Toledo in transforming the city into a Certified Autism Destination™. Currently, nearly 20 organizations in the region hold the Certified Autism Center™ designation.
Destination Toledo supports this initiative with resources available at VisitToledo.org/AutismTravel, including a Sensory-Friendly Guide to Toledo for visitors seeking accessible travel experiences.
“We’re delighted that Destination Toledo continues to foster an inclusive and accessible environment with the renewal of their certification. Millions of travelers are looking for welcoming destinations with trained and certified options to enjoy themselves,” said Myron Pincomb, IBCCES board chairman.
Since 2001, IBCCES has been at the forefront of training and certifying professionals in healthcare, education, and corporate sectors worldwide, specializing in autism, neurodiversity, and cognitive disorders. Recognizing the need for inclusivity, IBCCES developed tailored programs for hospitality and recreational industries, including hotels, theme parks, museums, and other attractions. These initiatives empower staff with the knowledge to better accommodate and serve a growing yet underrepresented segment of the population. As the sole credentialing body providing these unique offerings, IBCCES delivers training led by experts and autistic self-advocates, alongside ongoing support, continuous education, and additional resources.
To further support families, IBCCES launched AutismTravel.com a complimentary online platform showcasing certified professionals and destinations. Each listing on the site adheres to the rigorous standards of the Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) program.
