Safe, reliable airports are vital connections for communities across Canada, supporting economic growth, enhancing aviation services, and improving access to remote and Indigenous areas.
The Honourable Anita Anand, President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Transport, announced that the Government of Canada is investing $30 million to enhance air safety and connectivity at Thompson Regional Airport.
This funding, provided through the Airports Capital Assistance Program, will support the construction of a new apron, two taxiways (one paved and one gravel), and upgraded drainage and electrical systems.
Rising temperatures have destabilized the permafrost, weakening the existing apron and taxiway. The new infrastructure will be built on stable bedrock and incorporate innovative engineering to reinforce the permafrost, increasing its strength in cold weather.
These upgrades will improve safety for passengers, crews, and workers, while ensuring year-round connectivity and supply chain reliability for 37 northern communities served by the airport, including 15 remote Indigenous communities accessible only by air and ice roads.
