July 2024 Total International Travel Volume to and from the United States

 

Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office show that in July 2024, International Arrivals to the United States:

  • Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 6,899,661 increased 6.8 percent compared to July 2023, representing 89.6 percent of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for July 2019.
  • Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 3,424,737 increased 2 percent from July 2023.
  • The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada (1,978,222), Mexico (1,496,702), the United Kingdom (381,714), India (198,205), and Germany (191,164). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 61.5 percent of total international arrivals.
  • Of the top 20 tourist generating countries to the United States, Canada (-0.2 percent), France (-0.9 percent), and Switzerland (-2.9 percent) reported a decrease in visitor volume in July 2024 compared to July 2023.
  • The top 5 business visa arrivals by country in July were the United Kingdom (36,229), India (35,109), Mexico (excluding land 31,291), Japan (30,417), and Germany (21,125).
  • The top 5 tourism visa arrivals by country in July were the United Kingdom (342,788), Mexico (excluding land 335,288), Germany (168,306), France (163,613), and Brazil (151,190).
  • The top 5 student visa arrivals by country in July were India (24,298), China (19,634), South Korea (5,817), Brazil (3,636), and Taiwan (2,761).

 International Departures from the United States

  • Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 11,265,662 increased 5.8 percent compared to July 2023 and were 104.8 percent of total departures in pre-pandemic July 2019.
  • The year-to-date (YTD) market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 48.9 percent and overseas was 51.1 percent.
  • Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,562,298 (31.6 percent of total departures for July and 36.3 percent (YTD)). Canada recorded a year-over-year (YOY) increase of 7 percent.
  • Combined YTD, Mexico (22,802,352) and the Caribbean (7,292,329) accounted for 47.9 percent of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
  • Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 2,620,171 departures. This accounted for 23.3 percent of all departures in July. Outbound visitation to Europe in July 2024 increased 13.1 percent compared to July 2023.
