Antarctica21 Leading the Way in Curating Unforgettable Journeys to the World’s Most Remote Destination

Juan Cristobal Del Pedregal Bravo, Senior Commercial Director at Antarctica21, shares how their cruise company revolutionized Antarctic travel by pioneering the air-cruise model. Despite initial challenges, they have risen to become a global leader in Antarctic exploration. He also discusses the company’s strategic focus on Indian travelers, highlighting their cruises’ emphasis on comfort, efficiency, and sustainability. This aligns perfectly with India’s growing demand for high-end, exclusive travel experiences.

Founded in 2003 in Punta Arenas, Chile, Antarctica21 was born from the founders’ desire to create a more comfortable and efficient way to explore Antarctica, bypassing the turbulent Drake Passage. They introduced Antarctic air cruises, allowing travelers to fly directly to the continent and board small, boutique expedition ships. Their innovative approach aimed to make Antarctica more accessible while upholding principles of sustainability and responsible tourism. Over the past two decades, Antarctica21 has emerged as the global leader in Antarctic fly-cruise expeditions, offering travelers a unique and life-changing journey to the last great wilderness on Earth.

Pioneering Antarctic Exploration

Antarctica21 has completed over 300 successful flights to Antarctica, solidifying their position as the leaders in Antarctic air cruises. Their extensive experience has allowed them to continually refine their operations and improve safety measures.

In 2019, the company launched the purpose-built vessel Magellan Explorer, which was met with great success and reinforced the appeal of their small-ship model. Building on this momentum, they are currently constructing a sister ship, Magellan Discoverer. Antarctica21’s new Explorers House, located near the Punta Arenas hotel, serves as an exclusive base for guests, offering dining, a library, lecture spaces, expedition gear shopping, and more—a perfect prelude to the Antarctic adventure.

Antarctica21’s vessels, Magellan Explorer and Ocean Nova, offer an intimate experience with a maximum of 76 guests. With various cabin categories available—three on Ocean Nova and seven on Magellan Explorer—most cabins and all suites on Magellan Explorer feature private balconies, individual climate control, and ample storage. Both ships have a glass-enclosed observation area, providing panoramic views of the Antarctic landscape.

Dining onboard is a highlight, with spacious dining rooms, large windows, high-quality meals, and premium beverages, including a selection of fine Chilean wines. Guests can also enjoy fitness facilities, a library stocked with Antarctic-themed books, and a clinic staffed by a doctor for any medical needs. Magellan Explorer also offers a sauna for relaxation after a day of exploration.

Embrace the Untamed Wilderness

Juan highlights the ever-changing nature of Antarctica21 expeditions, shaped by weather, ice conditions, and wildlife movements. Flexible itineraries ensure guests experience the best of the region, including close encounters with penguin colonies like Gentoo, Chinstrap, and Adélie penguins, as well as whales such as humpback, minke, and orca. Zodiac cruises allow for navigating around icebergs and glacial fronts, while guests can also set foot on the Antarctic mainland. Optional activities, including kayaking and hiking, provide additional opportunities for adventure.

The small-scale nature of these expeditions encourages personal connections between guests and the expedition team, enriching the overall experience.

As Antarctica continues to grow as a premier travel destination, Antarctica21 anticipates an increase in interest from Indian travelers, eager to witness the continent’s unique wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.
