Aviation Industry Makes Steady Progress to a Sustainable Future

Sustainable aviation fuel is a hot topic when it comes to solutions to limit greenhouse gases by the aviation industry – since most of the focus lies on cutting CO2 emissions caused when burning jet fuel.

President of Shell Aviation, Jan Toschka, sat down last month with GBTA CEO, Suzanne Neufang, to discuss the decisions businesses’ travel programs can make and how they impact the aviation sector's decarbonization. And why is collaboration key?

"How much money every year is spent on corporate travel, you see this as an expense for the companies… But at the same time, it is also buying power, it's influencing power. It's steering us as the supplier, not only the fuel supplier but also hotels, the entire industry involved. Steering us toward better solutions, to greener solutions," said Toschka.

Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) offer a way to significantly reduce the aviation sector's global environmental impact and to help countries meet their climate change targets at the same time. Toschka shared that Shell aims to produce around 2 million tons a year of fuel worldwide by 2025. That said, industry experts say there’s more to it, including improving airport operational efficiency as a critical factor in helping the travel industry reach its overall emissions targets.
