January 2026 Traffic Results: 2,557,185 passengers handled by the Flughafen Wien Group (+5.0%) and 1,910,186 passengers at Vienna Airport (+1.1%)
The Flughafen Wien Group showed a positive development of passenger traffic in the first month of 2026. Total passenger volume in the entire Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) rose 5.0% year-on-year to 2,557,185 travellers. The number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport climbed 1.1% to 1,910,186 in the month of January 2026. Passenger volume at Malta Airport showed a rise of 17.2% to 594,889 travellers. Kosice Airport handled a total of 52,110 passengers, which represents a strong increase of 34.7% from the prior-year month.
The number of local passengers at Vienna Airport fell slightly by 0.5% compared to January 2025 to 1,534,396 travellers and the number of transfer passengers to 331,854 (-2.5%). The increase in passenger numbers at Vienna Airport is therefore primarily attributable to Air India stopovers for refuelling purposes, during which passengers do not leave the aircraft (so-called ‘transit passengers’).
The number of flight movements in January 2026 declined by 4.0% to 15,143 starts and landings. The seat load factor increased by +3.1 percentage points compared to January 2025. Cargo volume totalled 27,679 tonnes, comprising an increase of 5.3% from the prior-year month.
Details on passenger traffic
In January 2026, passenger traffic from Vienna Airport to Western Europe equalled 628,662 travellers (-1.2% YoY). The number of passengers flying to Eastern Europe in January 2026 amounted to 123,644 travellers (-9.0%). Vienna Airport reported a total of 25,712 passengers flying to North America (-7.7%) and 29,225 travellers to Africa (+9.0%). Passenger traffic to destinations in the Middle East were up 15.0% to 77,540 travellers in January 2026, whereas passenger volume to the Far East totalled 57,707 (+8.8%).
