UNWTO: Sustainability set to shape new standard of tourism statistics

The global world Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) initiative Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (MST) received a lift the other day when its working group met in Madrid (24-25 October). After successful pilot studies to create comparable and credible data, the initiative is on the right track with its goal of obtaining the MST framework adopted because the third international standard on tourism statistics.
The band of experts developing a statistical framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism met to determine the MST initiative’s major goals for 2019. A draft has been developed by the initiative framework for a data standard for tourism’s effect on sustainability and plans to possess it adopted because the third international standard on tourism statistics by the UN Statistics Commission (UNSC).
Among the certain specific areas of discussion through the group’ october were summarizing the pilot tests done in Germany s meeting on 24-25, Saudi and philippines Arabia to check MST’s relevance, and that have shown feasibility of the proposed framework in three different national contexts. This implies the MST framework is on the right track to be ready for submission being an international standard.
For 2019 the MST working group has tasked itself with refining and documenting three statistically-based tourism indicators to monitor the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their targets. UNWTO may be the custodian agency of the three indicators, and coordinates the development of tourism-related indicators with countries and UN agencies. The next phase is to present this draft framework in UNWTO&rsquo then;s 2019 meetings of its governing bodies.
Statistical frameworks enable countries to create data that’s comparable and credible across countries, time periods along with other standards. MST is really a UNWTO-led initiative for a statistical framework for tourism, supported by UNSC since March 2017. Its roadmap was occur the 6th International Conference on Tourism Statistics, in June 2017 in Manila held, Philippines.
In order to build up tourism potential, better manage the sector, and support effective evidence-based policy decisions, you will find a have to better measure tourism using high-quality official statistics covering economic, social, and environmental sustainability. MST aims to expand existing tourism measurement beyond its primarily economic dimension to also measure environmental and social dimensions.
It aims to link UNSC’s System of Environmental-Economic Accounting with the Tourism Satellite Account framework, that is among the two existing official frameworks for measuring tourism. Another may be the International Tips for Tourism Statistics. Both were proposed and developed to UNSC by UNWTO. An identical process is planned for MST.
